Buy by Total Width, Not by the Opening

Most crosshead products are sold one finished header per unit, so a house with a dozen windows and three doors becomes fifteen separate purchases. These kits work differently. Each kit is two 96-inch sticks, a backing and a matching profiled trim, cut down to trim whatever openings the project has. The trim is the limiting piece, since each crosshead consumes its own width of trim plus roughly an inch for the returns, so a kit yields about 90 inches of finished crosshead in total. That might be three 30-inch window heads, or a 60-inch door head and a pair of narrow windows. The method is simple: add up the width of every opening being trimmed, divide by 90 inches, and that is the kit count.

Topping Up Trim on Large Jobs

On most jobs, ordering the kit count that covers the total width leaves both trim and backing to spare. Occasionally, though, the way the cuts fall on a large or awkwardly sized run can leave a job a single piece of trim short while backing remains.
